What Lighting Work Do You Actually Need?

Lighting is one of those things that people put off until it becomes a problem. A blown down light that hasn’t been replaced in six months, outdoor lights that stopped working after a storm, a kitchen that’s never been bright enough, but you’ve lived with it anyway. Whatever the situation, here’s the most common lighting work we get called out for across the peninsula.

» LED Downlight Installation and Upgrades

Downlights are the most common lighting job we do. Whether you’re building new, renovating, or replacing old halogens, we supply and install LED downlights that run cooler, use less power and last longer. We can also replace a single blown-downlight without touching the rest of the ceiling.

» Feature and Pendant Lighting

Pendants and feature lights need to be positioned and wired correctly before anything goes in permanently. We install feature lighting in kitchens, dining rooms, and living areas, and take the time to get the height and placement right on the day.

» Small Commercial and Office Lighting

We work with small offices, cafes and restaurants on the peninsula for lighting upgrades and fitouts. LED panels, track lighting, hospitality feature lighting and general office upgrades are all jobs we handle. We don’t take on large commercial fitouts, but for a local small business, get in touch.

» Replacing Old Halogen Lighting

Halogens draw significantly more power than LEDs, run hot and cost more over time. Swapping them out is one of the simplest ways to cut your power bill without changing how your home looks. We do it cleanly with minimal disruption to your ceiling.

» Outdoor and Garden Lighting

Security lights, pathway lighting, entertaining area lights and sensor floodlights all need to be weatherproofed and wired for outdoor conditions. On the Redcliffe Peninsula, salt air is a real consideration, and we spec fittings accordingly.

Why Homeowners and Small Businesses on the Peninsula Use Us

» We Supply and Install

We can supply the fittings as well as install them. If you’d prefer to source your own, that’s fine too. Either way, everything goes in wired correctly and looking how it should.

» We Know the Older Homes Here

A lot of homes on the peninsula date from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Older wiring can make lighting upgrades less straightforward than they look. We factor that in when we quote, so there are no surprises on the day.

» No Guesswork on Placement

Spacing, angle and colour temperature all affect how a room feels. We talk you through the layout before anything gets cut into the ceiling, so you’re not stuck with a result you regret.

» Local, Reliable and Easy to Contact

We’re based in Clontarf, not Brisbane. We show up when we say we will, and we’re easy to get hold of if anything comes up.

What to Expect When We Come Out

Most residential lighting jobs can be completed in a single visit. If you’re not sure exactly what you want or need, we’ll start by walking through the space with you. For downlight installations, that means talking through how many lights you want, where they should go and what kind of output suits the room. For feature or pendant lighting, we’ll discuss height, positioning and how the fitting will be wired before we commit to anything.

Once we’ve agreed on the scope, we’ll give you a quote upfront before any work starts. There are no surprises on the invoice.

For small commercial jobs, we’ll generally conduct a site visit first to properly scope the work before providing a quote. Lighting in a hospitality or retail space often involves more planning around positioning, circuit load and how the space is used throughout the day.

Excellent service at a good price. Knowledgeable, always on time, efficient, tidy and goes out of his way to make sure the work is perfect. Bjorn is reliable, genuine and helpful (he was able to find the exact model of extractor fan and much better and more stylish light fittings than the ones I considered buying at a big store). Highly recommended. Thank you Bjorn! Fantastic job!

Frequently Asked Questions

How many downlights do I need in a room?

It depends on the size of the room, the ceiling height and the output of the fittings you choose. As a rough guide, most living areas and kitchens need one downlight per 1.5 to 2 square metres of floor space to feel well-lit, but that depends on whether you want ambient, task, or a combination of lighting. We’ll work through the layout with you before anything gets cut in, so you end up with a result you’re happy with.

Is it worth switching from halogens to LEDs?

In most cases, yes. LEDs draw a fraction of the power that halogens do and last considerably longer. The upfront cost of swapping them out is usually recovered through lower power bills within a couple of years. They also run much cooler, which matters in Queensland summers and reduces the heat load in your ceiling space.

Can you replace just one blown downlight, or does the whole ceiling need to be redone?

We can replace individual downlights without touching the rest. If you’ve got one that’s blown and the others are fine, there’s no need to redo the whole ceiling. That said, if your halogens are getting towards the end of their life and you’re replacing one, it’s often worth considering whether to switch the lot while we’re there.

Do I need an electrician to hang a pendant light?

Yes. Pendant lights and any other hardwired light fittings need to be installed by a licensed electrician. This includes replacing an existing pendant with a new one, even if it looks like a straightforward swap. The wiring, the mounting and the weight load all need to be handled correctly.

Can you install outdoor lighting on an existing circuit?

It depends on the capacity of your existing circuits and how much additional load you’re adding. For a couple of sensor lights or pathway lights, there’s often capacity on an existing circuit. For a larger outdoor lighting setup, it may need its own circuit. We’ll assess this when we quote and let you know what’s involved.

Do you do lighting for small businesses, or is it residential only?

We work with small offices, cafes and restaurants on the peninsula for lighting upgrades and fitouts. We don’t take on large commercial projects, but for a local small business, get in touch, and we can have a look at what you need.

My lights keep flickering. Is that a lighting problem or something else?

Flickering lights can be caused by a few different things. A loose connection at the fitting, a failing dimmer switch, an overloaded circuit, or a problem with the switchboard are the most common causes. It’s worth getting it looked at because persistent flickering can indicate a wiring issue that needs attention beyond just the light fitting itself.
