What is electrical bonding, and why does it matter for pools?
Electrical bonding connects all the metal components around the pool, including steel reinforcing, metal fencing within 1.25 metres of the pool edge, and conductive fittings, to a common earth point. This prevents dangerous voltage differences from building up between surfaces that someone in or near the pool could come into contact with. It’s a legal requirement under the Australian wiring rules and has to be carried out by a licensed electrician.
What is Tariff 33, and how does it work for pool pumps?
Tariff 33 is an off-peak electricity tariff available in Queensland that supplies power during off-peak hours, typically overnight and during low-demand periods. Connecting a pool pump to Tariff 33 and pairing it with a time clock means the pump runs automatically during cheaper hours, which can meaningfully reduce running costs. The circuit connection and time clock installation can be handled as part of the same job.
My pool pump stopped working. Is it an electrical problem?
Not always, but it’s worth checking the electrical side before assuming the pump has failed. A tripped safety switch, a blown fuse, a wiring fault, or a failed timer can all cause the pump to stop running and are cheaper to fix than replacing the pump. Get in touch, and the cause can be diagnosed properly before anything is replaced.
Do I need a safety switch on my pool circuit?
Yes. Queensland wiring rules require RCD protection on all pool pump circuits. If your pool doesn’t have a safety switch on the pump circuit, one needs to be added. This can be done as a standalone job or as part of a broader pool wiring inspection.
Can you inspect the electrical work on an older pool?
Yes. Existing pool wiring, bonding, earthing, and safety switch protection can all be checked as part of an inspection. For older pools on the peninsula that haven’t had any electrical work done in years, it’s a straightforward way to confirm everything is still safe and compliant.
