What You Need to Know Before Installing a Home EV Charger
Most people buying an EV for the first time haven’t given much thought to how they’ll charge it at home. Plugging into a standard power point works, but it’s slow, and it’s not what the car is designed for. A dedicated home charger is the practical solution, and getting it installed properly makes a real difference to how you use the car day to day. Here’s what’s involved.
» Level 1 vs Level 2 Charging
A standard 10-amp power point will charge your EV, but slowly, around 10 to 15 kilometres of range per hour. A dedicated Level 2 charger runs on a 32 amp circuit and delivers significantly more, typically enough to wake up to a full charge regardless of where the battery was the night before.
» Charger Placement
Where the charger is located affects both convenience and installation costs. A cable run from the switchboard is simpler and cheaper than a long conduit run across the property. We’ll assess the best location when we quote.
» Your Switchboard Needs to Be Assessed First
A dedicated EV charger requires its own circuit with a breaker and RCD protection. We assess your switchboard before anything gets installed. If it needs upgrading to handle the additional load, we’ll tell you upfront and include it in the quote.
» You Don’t Need Solar to Install an EV Charger
Most businesses advertising EV charger installation locally are solar companies bundling chargers into a larger package, but you don’t need solar. If you have it and want a charger that draws from your panels, that’s worth discussing, but it’s not a requirement, and we won’t push it.

What to Expect When We Come Out
Before anything gets installed, we come out and assess your switchboard and the location you have in mind for the charger. We check capacity, review the cable run, and talk you through the charger options that suit your car and situation so you get a clear quote before any work starts.
Most installations are done in a single visit. We run the dedicated circuit, mount the charger, and commission the unit, testing that it communicates correctly with your vehicle before we leave. If your switchboard needs upgrading to support the new circuit, we include that in the same visit where possible, so you’re not waiting on a second appointment.
Before we pack up, we walk you through how the charger works, including how to schedule charging during off-peak hours if that’s something you want to take advantage of.

Honestly, great experience! Knew no one in the area, looked online and called Bjorn based on reviews. First quoted very reasonable price, then attended property in less than a week to complete work. How long does installation take?
Most standard residential installations take between two and four hours. If switchboard work is needed, we include that in the same visit where possible, so it’s done in one go.
Will my existing switchboard handle it?
It depends on your board’s age and capacity. We assess this as part of the quote, so you know the full scope before any work starts.
Can I charge from my solar panels?
If you have solar, some chargers can be set to prioritise charging from your panels during the day. It’s worth discussing if that’s something you’re interested in, but solar isn’t a requirement.
Where does the charger get installed?
Most go in the garage or on an external wall close to where the car parks. The best spot balances convenience with a practical cable run from the switchboard. We’ll work that out when we quote.
Can I install one in a unit or apartment?
It’s more involved in strata properties and usually requires body corporate approval. Get in touch, and we can talk through what’s involved for your specific situation.
How will it affect my power bill?
You’ll use more electricity, but the cost per kilometre is still well below what you’d pay at the bowser. Scheduling charging during off-peak hours helps keep costs down.
